Xunantunich

Xunantunich is located across from the Mayan village of San Jose Succotz, and just a few miles from Belize's western border with Guatemala. The largest pyramid, El Castillo, rises 130 feet above the main plaza and offers an impressive panoramic views of the Cayo District and Guatemala.

West-Facing Frieze

El Castillo, is known for its frieze, a banded stucco decoration which at one time extended around the entire pyramid.

An Impressive museum displays a three-dimensional model of the entire Xunantunich site, as well as depicting the evolution of Maya civilization. Three stelae from the site are on display.

Getting to Xunantunich ...

Xunantunich is located across from Benque Viejo Road near the village of San Jose Succotz. From there a hand-cranked ferry will take you across the Mopan River. From the other side of the river it's a mile uphill to the site, which can be accessed on foot, horseback or in a vehicle.

Open daily 8-4 pm.
