Guatemala City

Guatemala City is the capitol, largest
and most modern city in Guatemala, with
a population of around 4 million.

Guatemala City or "Guate", as it's referred to locally, is the country's center for finance and politics. Its location, facilities and La Aurora International Airport make it a natural starting point for visits to the rest of the country.

Although many tourists coming to Guatemala avoid staying in the city and head straight to more popular tourist areas, such as Antigua, Panajachel, Chichicastenango, Flores or Tikal, there are several places to explore around the city for those who decide to give Guatemala City a try.

The city can be chaotic, peaceful, interesting or shocking depending on what part of the city you are in. The sprawling metropolis can be intimidating, as it is divided between the Old City and the New , as well as into 21 different "Zonas". However, there's virtually no reason to stray from the four central zones, which makes getting around -- and getting your bearings -- quite manageable.

The Old City covers Zona 1, in the north, and the New City spans Zona 9 and Zona 10, in the south. Zona 13 is where La Aurora International Airport
is located.

Zona 1
is the Historic Center (Centro Histórico), lying in the very heart of the city, the location of many important buildings including the Palacio Nacional (National Palace), the Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Congress, and the Casa Presidencial (Presidential House). Central Market is located behind the Cathedral. Here you can buy artisan pieces, jewelry, textiles, masks, flowers, fruits and vegetables and just about anything else.

Zona VivaZona 10
or "Zona Viva" is among the most popular areas for Pop Culture and Shopping and entertainment. Zona Viva is where most of the upscale hotels, restaurants, bars, discotheques, and other entertainment places in the city are located.

Additionally, many of the embassies are located in Zona 10, which is very safe and well-patrolled.
